Intrusive

Written by Thomas Rusch
A photographic series in cooperation with the Colombian artist Carolina Amaya

the dark figure from childhood that crawled out of the picture from the wall in grandma's bedroom. the dark, endlessly black, deep rainwater barrel in the neighbor's garden. The old scarecrows. dark fantasies. “evil” thoughts that are embedded in you. with which you may learn to play with pleasure someday. with a mixture of shuddering fascination and strange lustekel.
recurring mental Tourette, heavy violent nightmares, and mysterious lustful morbid sexuality create disturbing insecurity, even manifest disturbance. perhaps an endogenous trauma transmission or an incubus ?

Sometimes all of this mixes into an irritating neurotic amalgam. until you hear intrusive thoughts for the first time. most people know these moments: standing on a high bridge, looking down, and feeling the impulse to jump. or to want to scream spontaneously loudly and impurely in a largely silent group. these are intrusive thoughts: inappropriate thoughts and images at inappropriate times. a neural feedback loop. with most people nothing special. if they don't have a traumatic experience, depression, or obsessive-compulsive neurosis - just human, harmless, and weird.

Don't believe everything you think.

when I saw a work by carolina for the first time, I was very touched, shuddered, and had to laugh. I felt drawn and caught. I felt our common desire and fascination for meat, skin, and hair. and was as redeemed, as carolina paints from the supposedly gloomy and morbid cheerfulness, humor, and love.
